MR. NGUYEN VAN DAU AND THE 034 AVOCADO TREE
In 2009, Mr. Nguyen Van Dau was invited by the Agriculture Department of Bao Lam district and the technology transfer center of Lam Dong province to participate in a contest for high-yield and high-quality avocado trees in Lam Dong province.
His tree was highly evaluated by the judging panel for its excellent traits such as high fruit setting rate, resistance to diseases (especially twice per year), and high-quality fruits with golden flesh, small seeds, and a length ranging from 27 to 32cm and a weight from 400 to 600g. The fruit has a green skin that turns brown when ripe, and it is both tender and creamy. It is considered the number one avocado tree in the Bao Lam area of Lam Dong province.
As a result, Mr. Nguyen Van Dau avocado tree met all the standards required to be certified as the 034 first-generation avocado tree in 2009.
According to Mr. Ho Dinh Quang, Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department of Bao Lam district, Mr. Nguyen Van Dau household, located in Ward 1, Loc Thang town, is the only household to have been issued a certificate of authenticity for the 034 avocado tree. Currently, the 034 avocado trees available on the market are either hybrids or seedlings from Mr. Dau trees that have been propagated for sale. The quality of the hybrids is still guaranteed if the correct process is followed, such as selecting good scions and grafting onto trees that have already produced more than two sets of fruit. However, this type of hybridization is prone to genetic mutation and degeneration. Currently, there are over five different types of certified avocado trees for propagation in Bao Lam district. However, Mr. Nguyen Van Dau 034 avocado tree or the Dau Loan avocado nursery in Ward 1, Loc Thang town have outstanding features such as good growth, high fruit setting rate, large fruits with small seeds, green skin, golden flesh, and tenderness, which are highly favored by many people.
